That annoying sound – the relentless ringing in your ears. What is it and is there any way to make it stop? Is there a treatment for it that works?
These are all questions that have been asked by people with tinnitus – a perception of sound heard in the ear when there is no external source for the sound. It’s often described as a high pitched ringing, but has also been described as a chirping, roaring or whooshing.
This ringing can be caused by many different things. The most common of which is hearing loss resulting from an exposure to a very loud noise such as an explosion or continued exposure to above average noise levels such as those experienced at a construction site.
Other causes include low levels of iron, neurological disorders, mercury or lead poisoning, drug side effects and others.
Due to the wide variety of causes of a ringing sound heard in the ear, it is a problem experienced by a large number of people. People such as William Shatner, David Letterman and Bono have all lived with this problem for many years.

Secret Cold Sore Cure – How to Cure a Cold Sore
December 22, 2008 by Natural Remedy Reporter
Filed under Featured, Skin Care, Sores and Blisters
It never fails – you have a big presentation at work or it’s class picture day at school and you wake up to find a huge cold sore standing out prominently on your lip. This problem isn’t just experienced by adults. Kid’s cold sores are no different from adults’, but for kids, the experience can be mysterious and embarrassing.
Most cold sores start with a tingling sensation followed by the appearance of a blister on or around the lips that itch and can be very sore. Within a few days to several weeks, they burst, dry, encrust, and disappear. Cold sores can be irritating and embarrassing. Is there any cure to a cold sore?
Well yes and no…
Cold sores are very difficult to cure because of the cause behind them. Cold sores are an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: Type 1 (HSV-1), which is the most common form of the virus, causes cold sores (oral herpes) on or near the lips and mouth area. Type 2 (HSV-2) is responsible for the common STD. However, HSV-2 can also cause oral sores.
HSV-1 is incurable as herpes (HSV-2) is incurable. Once you have the virus, it’s in your system for life. Even when you don’t have a cold sore, the virus is hiding below the surface just waiting for a stressor to trigger it. The virus isn’t curable. However, it is possible to greatly reduce the number and length of cold sore breakouts.
Cold Sore Cures from the Kitchen

Milk: Next time you get the tingling sensation that often precedes a cold sore; try putting some milk on it. The secret to this cure is found in the milk fat. There’s a special protein called monocaprin that studies show can kill the virus. Since this protein is contained in the milk fat, whole milk works the best.
Let the milk sit at room temperature for 10 – 15 minutes. Soak a cotton ball in the milk and apply to the affected area. The longer left on the site of the sore the better.
Garlic: This one is a great cure for all kinds of medical issues. Garlic contains a natural antibiotic that fights multiple kinds of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites (and vampires.)
Garlic can be eaten whole, but may upset your stomach and others when they smell your breath. It tends to be much easier to use a garlic supplement.
Licorice: This candy contains glycyrrhizic acid (say that three times fast!) This acid attacks the cold sore virus eliminating the cold sores very quickly.
There’s two ways you can use this. The first and simplest way is to find real licorice and eat it. As your body digests the candy, the glycyrrhizic acid will be absorbed into your system and will go to work on the virus. The second way is to make a licorice cream out of licorice powder and vegetable shortening. Rub this compound onto the sore and let it sit. Don’t go overboard though as this mixture can irritate the skin if used excessively.
Additional Information
Next time you are facing a cold sore try some of the remedies above. However, for even more information on cold sore cures check out Gary Townsend’s incredible book Banish Cold Sores.

Improving Short Term Memory Naturally
December 17, 2008 by Natural Remedy Reporter
Filed under Featured, Lifestyle, Your Mind
If only our brains were like our computer, improving our memory would be a simple upgrade. Just buy some new hardware and you’re good to go. Unfortunately, our brains are much more complex than that.
Think of your brain like a muscle. To build (real) muscle, you don’t just go get muscle implants, you have to exercise and provide your body with the nutrients needed to build new muscle.
Your brain works in a similar fashion. Your brain’s “muscle” power can be built with proper exercise and nutrition. There are several ways in which your brain can be exercised, but first it’s helpful to understand exactly how your memory works.
How Memory Works
Simply put, memory is the act of recalling information that your brain has previously processed. However, the process is very complex and involves multiple components.
The major components of the brain used in memory storage and recall are:
- The hippocampus, a primitive structure deep in the brain, plays the single largest role in processing information as memory.
- The amygdala, an almond-shaped area near the hippocampus, processes emotion and helps imprint memories that involve emotion.
- The cerebral cortex, the outer layer of the brain, stores most long-term memory in different zones, depending on what kind of processing the information involves language, sensory input, problem-solving and so forth.
- In addition, memory involves communication among the brain’s network of neurons, millions of cells activated by brain chemicals called neurotransmitters.
These components are used in varying degrees depending on whether information is being stored in the short-term or long-term memory.
The Specifics of Short-Term Memory
As its name implies, short-term memory is for short-term storage. Hence, items stored in the short term memory are generally forgotten very quickly. If read a phone number, most people would be able to easily repeat it back. However, it’s likely that you wouldn’t be able to repeat it 5 minutes later unless you gave a concerted effort to remember it.
The average person’s short-term memory can hold around 7 items. That is why you can remember a phone number for a few minutes, but need your credit card number in front of you when ordering something.
Tips to Improve Your Short Term Memory
Brain Exercises
People are creatures of habit. When we perform tasks in the same way each time, our brain uses the same neural pathways to send the signals needed to complete those tasks. This could be the way you get dressed, the route you take to work or the way you put your makeup on.
Use Mnemonic Devices
This involves using things you are familiar with to remember things you aren’t familiar with
- Visual images - Try this when trying to remember someone’s name. Associate the face of a friend or a pleasant image with the new person’s name. Recently I met someone named Morgan. To remember their name I associated Morgan Freeman’s face with their name. For someone named “Mike” you could associate a picture of a microphone with their face.
- Create a sentence using words with a first letter that represents the list that you are trying to remember. If you were trying to remember the order of the planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune – you might use “Many Very Elderly Men Just Snooze Under Newspapers.” This is often used by medical students learning muscle groups, bones and other anatomical features.
- Acronyms, which are initials that creates pronounceable words. HOMES would be an example for remembering the Great Lakes - Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.
- Grouping information: Take a long string of information and break it up into chunks that are easier to remember. When remembering your Social Security Number, do you remember it as a 9-digit string or as a group of 3 numbers, 2 numbers and 4 numbers?
- “Method of loci” is an ancient memory tactic that is still in use by memory experts today. This involves associating a list of items with stops or “loci” on a journey. Try associating each item on your grocery list with each intersection you drive though on your way to work. This is one of the most powerful memory techniques. In fact, Clemens Mayer, the 2006 World Memory Champion, used a 300-point-long journey through his house for his world record in “number half marathon”, memorizing 1040 random digits in a half hour.
Additional Things to Consider
Your brain requires the same things the rest of your body needs to be healthy. Things like plenty of sleep, good nutrition and low stress levels can help your memory retention and recall significantly.
Foods That Speed Metabolism
December 11, 2008 by Natural Remedy Reporter
Filed under Healthy Eating
Every wonder why that certain person always manages to stay so skinny no matter what they eat? Chances are their metabolism is on overdrive. Whatever they eat is burned up before their body stores it as fat. Jealous? You shouldn’t be.
Most people don’t realize that your metabolic rate is not fixed. Your activity levels and the foods you eat have a direct impact on the rate that your body uses the energy stored in the foods you consume. You can increase your metabolism. In fact one of the easiest ways to do this is by eating. There are actually foods that speed up your metabolism.
Foods That Speed Up Your Metabolism
Add a few of these to your list next time you run to the grocery store:
- Apples
- Celery
- Garlic
- Lemons
- Mango
- Onions
- Papaya
- Cabbage
- Lettuce
- Avocado
- Carrots
- Berries
- Oranges
- Spinach
- Turnips
- Broccoli
- Tomatoes
- Zucchini
- Nut milks
- Seed milks
- Asparagus
- Cucumbers
- Pineapple
- Grapefruit
- Cauliflower
- Raw Nuts & Seeds
- Green, Leafy Veggies
- Rolled Oats
- Whey Protein
- Almonds
- Natural Yogurt
- Green Tea
- Beans
- Spinach
- Eggs
- Turkey
- Chicken Breast
- Peanut Butter
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Canola Oil
- Whole grains
- Berries
- Cayenne Pepper
- Coffee
- Water
- Steak
- Salmon
How Do They Work?
Metabolism boosting foods work for 5 general reasons.
- Foods containing fiber and complex carbs keep insulin levels low while you eat. Why is this good? Spike in insulin send a signal to your body that tells it to start storing fat. So your metabolic rate slows, fewer calories are burned and more fat is stored.
- Foods that are spicy or contain caffeine increase your heart rate. This increased heart rate can have a significant effect on the number of calories your body burns in a day.
- Foods containing a chemical called EGCG (usually found in tea) cause your brain and nervous system to operate more quickly. This equates to more calories burned in a day.
- Foods high in protein take longer to digest. You body has to work harder to break down proteins that it does for fat or carbohydrates. Thus more calories are burned in the digestion process
- Foods packed with Omega-3 fatty acids effect the levels of the hormone leptin. Current research shows that the levels of leptin in your body has a direct relation to your metabolic rate. More leptin means more calories burned.
A Few More Tips
Start early with a smart breakfast that includes some of the items above. Why? When you sleep at night your body goes into fasting mode and you burn fewer calories. Starting the day with a good breakfast kicks your body out of that mode and starts you burning more calories earlier in the day.
Eat smaller meals throughout the day. When eating more often, you tend to eat less at one time, which reduces the strain on your digestive system allowing it to work more efficiently.
When snacking, stick to foods high in lean protein – nuts and seeds are great. These foods also contain a high amount of amino acids which take more work to break down. This means more calories are burned to digest them.
Put these into practice with the list of foods above and you’ll be well on your way to a speedy metabolism.
The Truth About Six Pack Abs Review
December 10, 2008 by Natural Remedy Reporter
Filed under Featured, Muscle Building, Product Reviews
This week in our product review series we do here on Natural Remedy Reports, we are putting the wildly popular program, The Truth About Six Pack Abs under review.
Mike Geary is the author of this internationally best belling e-book, The Truth About Six Pack Abs. He is a certified personal trainer and certified nutrition specialist. He specializes in body fat reduction strategies, functional strength and power training. His work has been featured in Muscle & Fitness Magazine and he has been published on over 1,000 fitness websites.
A snippet from his biography states: “I constantly dedicate myself to staying up-to-date on new and innovative training strategies as well as nutrition in order to pass this valuable information on to my readers, and help improve the quality of their lives.”
What Is This Book Really About?
On the main page of the website for The Truth About Six Pack Abs it gives 5 Facts You MUST Understand if You Are Ever Going to Lose Your Belly Fat and Get Six Pack Abs:
1. Many so-called “health foods” are actually cleverly disguised junk foods that actually stimulate you to gain more belly fat… yet the diet food marketing industry continues to lie to you so they can maximize their profits.
2. Ab exercises like crunches, sit-ups, and ab machines are the LEAST effective method of getting flat six pack abs. We’ll explore what types of exercises REALLY work in a minute.
3. Boring repetitive cardio exercise routines are NOT the best way to lose body fat and uncover those six pack abs. I’ll show you the exact types of unique workouts that produce 10x better results below.
4. You DON’T need to waste your money on expensive “extreme fat burner” pills (that don’t work) or other bogus supplements. A special class of natural foods is much more effective. I’ll tell you about these natural foods and their powers below.
5. Ab belts, ab-rockers, ab-loungers, and other infomercial ab-gimmicks… they’re all a complete waste of your time and money. Despite the misleading infomercials, the perfectly chiseled fitness models in the commercials did NOT get their perfect body by using that “ab contraption”… they got their perfect body through REAL workouts and REAL nutrition strategies. Again, you’ll learn some of their secrets and what really works below.
This program isn’t about doing 300 crunches per day to build your ab muscles; it is about effective tactics to increase your metabolism and overall health. The tactics taught show you how to train your body to burn fat residually. That means that you aren’t just burning calories while you’re exercising, but you are burning calories while you work, eat and sleep.
What This Book Is Not
Mike plainly states that The Truth About Six Pack Abs is not about supplements or fat-loss pills. It is not about expensive meal plans. It is not about “abdominizer machines” or “ab gadgets.” This program is not about fad diets such as “low-carb” or “low-fat.” It is about eating a nutritious diet and exercising effectively.
Does It Really Work?
That’s the big question here. Does The Truth About Six Pack Abs really work? We did some digging and could find very few people that had negative things to say about it. In fact, the only thing we could find is people wishing that the book came in a hard copy rather than a downloadable format.
Here’s some of the positive information we found:
“Mike, I have been following your workout plans from your ebook for past couple months. I wanted you to know that I have seen great results. When I started I was 190 lbs, waist 35 inches,
bench was 165lbs.
I’m now 175 lbs, with a waist of 33 inches, and benching 225lbs. Your full body workouts are some of the best I’ve ever used. I’m also making much better food choices now based on your advice and staying away from the junk I used to have trouble with. Thanks for everything.”
John P. Hembree, Sergeant, US Military
“Dear Mike,
I thoroughly read your e-book a few weeks ago but have been too busy lately to get myself to the gym. However, I did start applying your diet and food recommendations, and even with just that, I’ve already lost 6 lbs (10 lbs to go). I finally got to the gym this morning and printed out your e-book to bring with me.
I did some of the workout examples you specified like the one arm snatches, dumbbell swings, staggered lunges and all the ab exercises (from level 3).
Man, that was one of the best and most intense workouts I have had in ages! I did not waste hours jogging or doing all that other stuff I used to do (which by the way never got me anywhere). I am so excited to go back to the gym and have your book with me as a personal trainer’s guide.
Thank you so much!”

Signs of Anemia
December 8, 2008 by Natural Remedy Reporter
Filed under Blood Disorders, Featured
What are the signs of anemia? Anemia itself is a deficiency of hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying component of the red blood cell) in the blood. This deficiency can be due to a low red blood cell count due to excessive blood loss or some type of disorder causing destruction of red blood cells at a rate quicker than their production. Hemoglobin deficiency can also be caused by a lack of iron – a component needed for hemoglobin production.
Since anemia is the lack of the oxygen-carrying component of the blood – signs of anemia tend to be similar to those shown when the body isn’t getting enough oxygen.
Signs of Anemia include:
- Headache – Like all part of the body, the brain requires oxygen to function properly. Any lowering of oxygen level in the brain can cause a swelling of the arteries of the area, causing headaches.
- Feelings of breathlessness – Your body gauges the rate of your respiration based on the levels of oxygen in your blood. As a natural response to low oxygen levels in your bloodstream, your body tells you that you need to breathe more, hence breathlessness.
- Weakness – You body needs oxygen to function. Without enough oxygen, your body cannot function at “full power.”
- Fatigue – For the same reasons that you would feel weak, you would also experience fatigue.
- Excessive thirst – The reason for excessive thirst isn’t necessarily known, but has been reported by some with anemia.
- Dizziness – Associated with lack of oxygen
- Fainting - Associated with lack of oxygen
- Rapid or irregular pulse – When your organs are not getting the oxygen required, you body may try to increase blood flow by increasing your heart rate.
- Difficulty concentrating – Usually associated with the brain not getting the required amount of oxygen.
- Ringing in the ears – Can be due to a change in blood pressure and lack of oxygen
- Difficulty sleeping - When your body is not functioning properly is can be difficult to sleep.
- Pale complexion - Associated with lack of oxygen
- Abnormal menstruation – Anemia is a physiological stressor, which can affect the menstrual period.
What Causes Anemia?
The most common cause of anemia is a lack of iron. This deficiency is usually due to a poor diet lacking in the vitamins, minerals and proteins that the body requires to function properly. However, issues that are more serious can also be at the root of the problem. Conditions such as kidney disease, autoimmune disorders, congenital disorders or an issue with the body being able to absorb the nutrients ingested.
What to Do When You Experience the Signs of Anemia
Anemia due to a lack of nutrients can usually be solved with a simple iron supplement.
However, due to the seriousness of other issues that could be at the root of the problem, a visit to your doctor is highly recommended.
Natural Treatments for Type 2 Diabetes
December 6, 2008 by Natural Remedy Reporter
Filed under Featured, Vitamins and Supplements
Disclaimer: Natural treatments for type 2 diabetes can help regulate blood sugar and help your body respond better to insulin. However, never use these treatments as a substitute for your doctor’s instructions and always consult your doctor before trying any of the ideas below as they could interact with any medication you may be taking.
To understand how various herbs, vitamins and minerals can help manage your type 2 diabetes, you need to understand what is actually going on in your body. In your body, your cells need energy to perform their cell duties. They get this energy from glucose which comes from the starches and sugars that you eat. However, your cells cannot ingest glucose directly. They need a helper.
Enter insulin. Insulin builds a bridge between your cells and the glucose. This allows your cells to “eat.” The problem with type 2 diabetes is that the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. This leaves you with hungry cells that cannot perform to their fullest.
Knowing this, there are many supplements, vitamins and minerals that can help with the production of insulin and the regulation of blood glucose levels.
1) Ginseng
Ginseng is a species of slow-growing plant with fleshy roots. It can be found growing naturally in many of the countries in the northern hemisphere. However it is primarily found in North America and eastern Asia. It is primarily touted for its anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant properties.
Some research done on Asian ginseng suggests that it may lower blood glucose levels. Other studies performed on North American ginseng show that it may improve blood sugar control and glycosylated hemoglobin (a form of hemoglobin in the blood used to monitor blood glucose levels over time) levels.
We recommend Panax Red Ginseng.
2) Chromium
Chromium known to enhance the action of insulin. A shortage of Chromium inhibits the body’s ability to use glucose requiring the levels of insulin needed to meet energy needs. Studies suggest that 200 to 1000 mcg of chromium daily can improve insulin efficiency and glucose tolerance.
Chromium can be found naturally:
| Food | Chromium (mcg) |
|---|---|
| Broccoli, ½ cup | 11 |
| Grape juice, 1 cup | 8 |
| English muffin, whole wheat, 1 | 4 |
| Potatoes, mashed, 1 cup | 3 |
| Garlic, dried, 1 teaspoon | 3 |
| Basil, dried, 1 tablespoon | 2 |
| Beef cubes, 3 ounces | 2 |
| Orange juice, 1 cup | 2 |
| Turkey breast, 3 ounces | 2 |
| Whole wheat bread, 2 slices | 2 |
| Red wine, 5 ounces | 1-13 |
| Apple, unpeeled, 1 medium | 1 |
| Banana, 1 medium | 1 |
| Green beans, ½ cup | 1 |
However, due to the relatively small amounts found naturally, it is generally much easier to take them in a concentrated form. Chromium can be found here.
3) Magnesium
Magnesium is a naturally occurring element that is used in nearly every major bodily process.
According to the U.S. Government’s Office of Dietary Supplements:
Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, and is known to be involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis. There is an increased interest in the role of magnesium in preventing and managing disorders such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Dietary magnesium is absorbed in the small intestines. Magnesium is excreted through the kidneys. Source here. Emphasis added.
Magnesium can be found in most multi-vitamins. It can also be found as a stand-alone supplement – Dyno-Mins Magnesium.
4) Cinnamon
Cinnamon: Good for baking, good in apple cider, good for your diabetes?
Multiple studies have been published on the effects of cinnamon on blood glucose levels and LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). In one study participants were given approximately one quarter teaspoon to one teaspoon of cinnamon for 40 days. At the end of the study all groups saw significant reductions in their fasting blood glucose levels, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.
For more on the effects of cinnamon see this article on About.com
One of the best sources of cinnamon for diabetics is Enhanced Cinsulin with Glucose Management Proprietary Blend.
5) Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera gels is typically used for burns and various other skin conditions. However, recent studies have shown that Aloe Vera can have an effect on blood sugar levels. Scientists have identified certain compounds in the gel that reduce blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels.
Aloe Vera can be found in a pill form, but is usually only carried by specialty health food and natural supplement stores.
6) Polyphenols
Polyphenols are a group of chemical substances found in plants – most notable are peanuts, pomegranates, beer, olive oil, chocolate, coffee and tea. They are an antioxidant and can help reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer.
Studies suggest that a polyphenol found in green tea may have a positive impact on insulin levels and glucose control. However, small clinical trials have been inconclusive. However, it has been proven that the polyphenols in green tea inhibit amylase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down simple sugars that can travel through the blood stream. Thus helping to control blood sugar levels.
Don’t like to drink green tea? Try Green Tea Extract.
7) Vanadium
Vanadium is a naturally occurring element found in about 65 different minerals. While typically used in steel production, Vanadium has shown to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It appears to mimic many of the actions of insulin in the body.
The use of this supplement does not come without a warning though as the levels required to be effective can be toxic. As with all supplements, be sure to consult your health care professional before using.
Vanadium can by found in products such as Vanadyl Sulfate.
8) Momordica Charantia
Momordica is a plant that is native to tropical locations in South America, Asia, East Africa and The Caribbean. It can also go by the names of bitter melon, Karela or balsam pear. Ancient Indian practitioners have used the extract of the unripe fruit of the plant to treat conditions such as diabetes, infections and cancer.
Momordica works in much the same way as insulin to reduce blood sugar levels. A study published in the British Biomedical Journal of Science in 2005 “showed that M. charantia extract normalized blood glucose level, reduced triglyceride and LDL levels and increased HDL level. The animals reverted to a diabetic state once the M. charantia extract was discontinued.”
Momordica Charantia can come in a pill or liquid form and is usually only carried by specialty retailers.
And Many More…
This is only a short list of supplements that have been found to be a natural treatment for type 2 diabetes. Stop by your local health food and supplement store sometime. The people working there are usually very knowledgeable and can offer guidance on natural remedies to help improve insulin efficiency and control blood sugar levels.

Your colon: that important part of your digestive system that you really didn’t know was that important. If most people were asked, “What does the colon do?” many wouldn’t have a clue how to answer. Even fewer would be able to tell you the problems that an unhealthy colon can cause. To maintain good health, you body has to be able to properly process food and eliminate harmful toxins from itself. Enter the colon.
The colon’s main job is:
- To extract the last bit of water from your food
- Absorb nutrients
- Absorb electrolytes
- Dispose of toxins
- Remove body waste
The technical stuff
You colon forms the lower part of your Gastrointestinal tract – the large intestine, rectum and anus. It starts at the cecum (where your small intestine connects to the large intestine) rectum. It’s comprised of the ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid flexure. The first part of the colon is responsible for absorbing nutrients and electrolytes while the latter part is for excreting body wastes.
So what happens when my colon is unhappy?
When your colon isn’t functioning as it should, your body isn’t able to absorb nutrients and dispose of toxins as well is it should be able to. This can cause a whole host of problems ranging from bloating and constipation to things as serious as colon cancer. When the colon ain’t happy, ain’t no body happy.
Take care of your colon.
If you don’t, you may have to visit one of these guys…
So go pour yourself a tall glass of prune juice get on a nice colon cleansing diet and make a toast to a clean colon and a long happy life!
